Crash safety of helicopters has always held a strong area of interest with BAE Systems, a company which now encompasses the Simula and Schroth Companies. In support of these interests, BAE Systems has developed a belt mounted airbag system for use in helicopter applications. This paper identifies the design approach and test performance of the SMART-5? Inflatable Restraint System currently under development at BAE Systems. SMART-5 represents a SMART-belt airbag technology mounted on a 5-point safety harness. The SMART-5 project is part of BAE Systems approach to establish a family of belt mounted airbag systems for aviation applications, with a goal of improved occupant crash protection in existing and future aviation applications.
