Enterprise Project/Cost Management Systems Implementation: Lessons Learned

This paper analyzes lessons learned from the author’s experience participating in fourenterprise project management/cost management system implementations over the past 10 years, forlarge public agencies engaged in capital project delivery. The focus is on the non-technical or softissues that often determine the success or failure of a project. It discusses approximately one dozenkey issues along with relevant characteristics, potential impacts on project success (based on theauthor’s experience), and specific strategies for addressing them. Results may be used in planning,designing and implementing similar enterprise systems to maximize project success with regard toscope, schedule, budget, and client satisfaction. The results of this analysis show that there are keysuccess factors that, although not easily quantifiable, contribute to project success and virtually all ofthese strategies can be considered and/or implemented early in the project where they can providethe greatest overall benefit.
