Commercial state of the art of CO_2 capture technologies for existing power plants arelimited to amine absorbents. The regeneration of these solvents decreases the power plantelectrical output by 15 to 30 % due to the use of steam in solvent regeneration. The proposedconcept of CO_2 capture uses only waste flue gas heat for regeneration of dry sodium orpotassium carbonate sorbents recently developed at RTI and earlier Gidaspow and Onischak.Hence, the only parasitic power loss will be the energy needed for sorbent circulation. Thedramatic energy saving is possible due to the use of reduced pressure downcomer sorbentregenerator. Furthermore, the proposed sorber size will be much smaller than that beingdeveloped at RTI due to high sorbent circulation rates. The new design will be developedusing multiphase computational fluid dynamics developed at IIT during the last two decades.
