MULTITASKING WHILE CHATTING WITH FRIENDS: A SOCIAL TRANSLUCENCE PERSPECTIVE

In this study we investigate how social cues designed into software are interpreted by users. Weuse two components of social translucence theory – visibility, and awareness to capture theperceived translucence of Instant Messaging software. We then develop and empirically test aresearch model of how the perceived social translucence of software is associated withmultitasking. Our results indicate that perceptions of social software are context dependent andin the presence of strong ties, users combine cues in face to face relationships with cues fromsoftware when they multitask while chatting.
