Self-powered active vibration control is a system that produces a control force using energy generated from vibration and carries out the control without power sources. The authors propose to apply this control system to smart structures using a piezoelectric actuator. Assuming the structure is a simply supported beam, a linear state space equation is derived and an equation to estimate the power balance is presented. The results of the numerical simulations and experiments show the active control system suppresses vibration better than a passive control system where the amount of the power generated exceeds the amount consumed.
