Maintenance managers schedule preventive maintenance in order to minimize maintenance cost or to comply with production planning requirements. However, maintenance interruptions affect process time variability and resource utilization, determining adverse effects on manufacturing performance such as Work In Process and cycle time. In this paper approximated queueing models are utilized to asses the impact of maintenance parameters on WIP and overall cost in case of a single server workstation and age replacement maintenance policy. It is shown that, with highly saturated resources, a minimum WIP may occur, and this generally happens for maintenance intervals not corresponding to a minimum maintenance cost. This asks for trade-off decisions by plant managers.
