Greenhouse gas emissions from aviation are expected to rise significantly due to the continuing increase in the number of commercial flights. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to assess the amount of CO2 produced by major European carrier and (2) compare the CO_2-sensitive ???????????????????? productivity development for the period 2002- 2010. We compute a sequential Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index in order to to measure efficiency change index and technical change index without bias. Our results show that European airlines exhibit a large variability in terms of CO_2 kg per ASK. Furthermore;;we show that airlines included in our sample have been able to recover the fall in productivity to the pre-crisis value. Moreover;;we categorize airlines into four groups according to their innovating and catching up abilities. Last;; we define out of 23 airlines four carriers (i.e.;;Lufthansa;;Ryanair;;Easyjet and Virgin Airlines) that push the technology frontier outwards: we defined them as innovator airlines.
