Every country around the world builds Intelligent Transport Systems(ITS) as a means ofsolving the urban traffic problems, to ensure smooth traffic flow and to enhance trafficsafety. For this reason, ITS focuses on improving the efficiency or convenience of vehicleor traffic utilization.Suncheon City, located in the south part of Korea, has also established a master plan forITS to solve the urban traffic problems and is examining various ITSs to choose one tointroduce. Among them, Suncheon City is planning to introduce Green Traffic InformationSystem which has been rarely considered by other cities. Unlike other ITSs that aim atsolving the traffic congestion, the Green Traffic Information System aims at the trafficmanagement to minimize the air pollutant emission from vehicles.The Green Traffic Information System measures the concentrations of nitrogenous oxide(NOx), sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone in the air, uses them as greeninformation parameters, and combines them with the existing traffic information (trafficflow, accident information). Based on the combined information, it analyzes the amount ofair pollutant emission and the energy consumption, by hours, days, and months, to monitorthe degree of air pollution in real-time and control the urban traffic flow.The Green Traffic Information System will enable the integrated management of trafficcongestion and air pollution as well as the urban traffic control. In other words, the GreenTraffic Information System enables "green traffic management" that is not only able tominimize the traffic congestion but also able to minimize the air pollutants emitted fromautomobiles.
