Used the techniques of spatial analysis in GIS, the status of land used and required remediation in different reaches in the floodplain of the lower Yellow River is analysised. The remediation-required area of branches along embankment, ditches, lowland, sandy wastelands and pit-ponds is 669. 81 km2, which accounts for 14. 6% of the total area of the lower floodplain. The amount of required sedimentation is about 1.18044 billion m. These lands are very barren, or difficult to cultivate on, or long-time water accumulated. It will threaten the safety of embankment and the floodplain once flood overbank occurred. So the land can be ecological restored if using siltation techniques of gravity or machine, which can increase the cultivated area, raise the land use efficiency, improve the ecological environment and guarantee the flood control safety.
