Side forces on bodies moving with supersonic speed can be produced by injecting afluid directed along the axis normal to the body motion. The current paper presents analternative method, based on ejection of pellets instead of jets. We study the effect ofspherical pellet ejection, from finite, circular, rotating and non-rotating cones moving atsupersonic speed at zero angle of attack, on the side forces produced on the cone. Theresults show similarity in normalized sphere trajectory and normalized force andimpulse components acting on the cone. In rotating cones, increasing the cone angularvelocity tilts the angle of the added impulse and increases the force augmentation factor.Comparing the augmentation factor for the case of ejecting spheres with existing datafor jet injection (from non-rotating bodies) we see that solid spheres can be a viablealternative for producing lateral momentum for maneuvering of slender bodies movingat supersonic speed.
