Microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) was prepared as the flame retardant and characterized by FTIR in this paper. The resultant polypropylene filled with microencapsulated red phosphorus was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and themogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated as well. LOI of the composite system reached 33.5 when addition of MRP was 15 phr. Mechanical properties of polypropylene filled with MRP was little less than that of pure polypropylene. It was found that microencapsulated red phosphorus was an effective flame retardant for polypropylene composites.
