PERFORMANCE OF SUGARCANE CLONES UNDER LATE PLANTED RAINFED CONDITIONS

Out of 10 sugarcane Clones tested at the Liaison Farm of M/s Etikoppaka Cooperative Sugars Limited, Darlapudi, Visakhapatnam from 2006-07 to 2008-09 under late planted rainfed conditions. 97 A 85, 83 R 23 and 87 A 298 were found superior for cane yield and sugar yield. The clones 87 A 298 and 85 A 261 consistently recorded the highest per cent juice. The high yielding clones 97 A 85, 87 A 298 and 83 R 23 are resistant to red rot. 97 A 85 is suitable for cultivation under problematic soils also. The clone 87 A 298 is an excellent ratooner but susceptible for smut. However, smut can be controlled effectively by sett treatment with propiconazole or by foliar spray in ratoons. 97 A 85 and 83 R 23 are erect growing clones with non-lodging nature.
