Wh en a n atural or man -made d isaster s trikes a village or city, a region, or even entire countries, it is crucial that on -site res ponse forces, 1ocal, n ational a nd in ternational rescue o rganisations, as well as responsi ble government agencies receive precise information as quickly and reliably as possible. This pape r pr esents the valuable suppor t that spaceborne re mote s ensing can b ring to rap id emerg ency response activi ties in cas e of s evere n atural d isasters. Th e concept and use of multi-missi on Earth Observation will b e highlighted to serve users as good as possible with t he information required and support the decision making process and to man age d isasters an d cris es. Key requirement is t o enable near-real-time availability of and access to optical (e.g. SPOT) as w ell as rad ar d ata s ources (e.g. TerraS AR-X) complemented by ope rational e nd-to-end pr ocessing and information extraction infrastructure.
