EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF FIRE DEVELOPMENT IN A REAL FIRE IN A FIVE STOREY DWELLING

A fire in a five storey dwelling was investigated experimentally and numerically. The roomof origin of the fire was a living room in the second floor and the fire was started by a candleon a television set. The fire spread externally over the building fa?ade and internally alongthe stair case and affected all the flats above and leading to two fatalities. The fire thought tohave been detected minutes after ignition and the fire service was called very short after thedetection and was at the scene 9 minutes after the call. By this time large sections of thefa?ade were on fire already. The rapid fire spread over the fa?ade and the stair casenecessitated detailed investigations. Compliance of building products with the buildingregulations was investigated. One conclusion of the investigations was that the person whocaused the fire by leaving the candle on the TV set unattended should not be held responsiblefor the two fatalities in the upper floors.
