This paper reports on the analysis of cycle variation in Spark Ignition Engine. 2Dmeasurements of combustion-related luminosity were taken in optically accessibleengine and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is applied to the acquired images.The coefficients of the decomposition are then used for the analysis of cycle variability.The advantage is that statistical analysis can be run on a small number of scalarcoefficients rather than on the full data set of pixel–valued luminosity. POD modes arediscriminated by means of normality tests, to separate the mean from the coherent andthe incoherent parts of the fluctuation of the luminosity field, in a non–truncatedrepresentation of the data.
