In this paper, we consider production scheduling as a control problem under uncertainty.First the similarities and the differences between process control and online schedulingare discussed. A key issue in both contexts is the handling of uncertainty in feedbackstructures. It is advocated to use explicit models of the uncertainties in the form of scenariotrees and to include the existence of feedback by solving two-stage models onrolling horizons. The interaction of planning and scheduling in the presence of uncertaintyand feedback is discussed. The proposed model structure is a “telescopic” multiscalemodel where the layers are coupled by targets for and feedback information aboutthe states of the system.
