We have developed novel hydroxyapatitecoatings as a vehicle for controlled protein delivery.The coatings are grown on the surface ofbiodegradable polymer microspheres using abiomimetic process. Proteins bind efficiently to thesurface of the mineral coating, and can also beincorporated into mineral coatings during the growthprocess. Protein release kinetics from mineralcoatings are sustained over time, and are dependenton the mineral dissolution rate. Therefore, thissystem represents a controllable approach forsustained protein delivery, and the approach may beadaptable to a broad range of proteins and desiredrelease regimens.
