Development of Double Double-Loaded Liposomeswith Benzocaine and Butamben as Cyclodextrin Complexes

Liposomes contammg benzocame or butamben, both as plain drug and as cyclodextrin complex, have been developed to combine the relative advantages of these carriers (liposome and cyclodextrin) in a single delivery system. Double-loaded liposomes were prepared by adding the plain drug to the lipophilic phase of the vesicles and the corresponding cyclodextrin complex in the hydrophilic phase. Preliminary studies allowed selection of the most effective composition of the vesicle membrane. In vivo studies showed that the new formulations enabled a significant improvement of the therapeutic efficacy of both drugs with respect to the corresponding liposomes simply loaded with plain drugs.
