The primary objective of this work was toevaluate the in vivo hair growth promoting effect ofsodium L- ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (SAP) with orwithout methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). In vitro hairlessmice skin permeation/retention of SAP in presence of 1, 5,10% MSM was also performed to see the effect of MSMon the permeation and/or skin retention of SAP. Thecomparisons were made with saline and Minoxyl(R)(Hyundai Pharma, Korea). The in vivo hair growth studyresults showed that the hair growth was high with all SAPgroups irrespective of the MSM amount and comparablewith Minoxyl-treated mice. The in vitro Franz cellpermeation study revealed that the skin content of SAPwas found to be increasing with increasing MSM content,with highest being 0.16 mg/cm2 skin for 10% MSM.Interestingly, the presence of MSM has no effect on thepenetration of SAP. The in vitro study demonstratespotential hair growth promoting effect of SAP in presenceand absence of MSM.
