A microsphere/hydrogel combinationsystem was prepared for controlled delivery ofvascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).Sustained release of VEGF from the deliverysystem was achieved for three weeks in vitro,and its bioactivity was maintained. Improvedangiogenesis was achieved, when the systemwas injected into ischemic hindlimb of mice.This approach may find useful applications inthe treatment of ischemic vascular disease aswell as in tissue engineering.
