Liposome Applications in Cancer Therapy - Doing New Tricks to Old Drugs

Liposome-based systems offer a vast array ofpotential applications in the delivery of cancerchemotherapeutic agents. Provided liposomecomposition and drug entrapment are properlyengineered, major changes in the pharmacokineticsand biodistribution can be obtained. Thepharmacodynamic impact of these changes may alterthe toxiciy profile and significantly improve thetherapeutic index of the entrapped drug. Althoughliposomal doxorubicin has already found a place inroutine clinical use, the potential of liposomal drugdelivery remains so far under-exploited.
