A vision method based mechatronic measurement system enables the inspection of a surface structure with micrometric resolution. The measurement system based on modular structure consists of a vision module containing: CCD camera, lens and illumination unit, mechatronic module for positioning the camera and a computer based control system and software. The developed system is dedicated to on-line monitoring of fatigue cracks in the surface structure of materials under constant or cyclic mechanical and thermal loads during tests. In order to ensure micrometric measurement resolution optics with low angle viewing was applied. The on-line monitoring process is based on real-time analysis of captured images. When current coordinates of a crack front are determined, the mechatronic module moves the vision head to a new position. In basic configuration the systems calibration, control parameters, data recording, and the presentation of measurement results are the main system features. Reconfigurable system structure enables its adaptation to specific requirements and other applications.
