The paper presents solutions ensuring the appropriate conditions for industrial in-line optical inspection of a high quality metal surface, regarding especially the cleanness and illumination of the surface to be inspected. The problems to solve were caused by special requirements of the automatic optical inspection and very difficult conditions on the production line of bearing rollers. The developed and implemented in-line AOI system enables the inspection of rollers. Several defects, such as surface damages, loss of material, cracks, scratches, corrosion, and grinding faults are being detected. There are a number of effects and factors in the production line, such as mechanical impurities, condensates, vibration, and lighting changes, which disturb the process of image acquisition and negatively influence the quality inspection of parts. The developed and practically verified methods for the limitation of this influence are presented. Pneumatics engineering was applied in the developed automated system for cleaning the surface of the rolling face before the inspection. To ensure illumination of the inspected surface, a lighting system was developed during the studies of the interaction of light with a high-reflective metal surface. Optical head resistance for condensates and impurities was developed for the protection of the vision system against industrial disturbances, which appeared in the bearing rollers grinding process.
