Leveling the Production of a Potting System: A TOC/Lean approach

On a value stream where several products have dedicated and common equipments it’s important to understand thecapacity of which process and identify the main constraint of the value stream in order to obtain the bestperformance of the system. Incorporating Theory of Constraints (TOC) and Lean principles and tools formanufacturing systems a synchronizing method was developed to improve a value stream results. The proposedmethod was applied to level the production on a potting system (monument equipment) that requires having theparts needed to load the system, making possible to synchronize all the flow for each model with the best size ofinventories and productivity and schedule attainment with the stability of leveling production but at the same timeflexible enough to incorporate changes when and if needed. This paper will explained how theory of constraints andlean principles were integrated to create the right production sequence on an equipment with nine hours of lead timeand how to get the right parts on the right quantity to be deliver to several different costumers.
