An Agent-Based Approach to Enhance CollaborativeProduct Design

Businesses are undergoing a major paradigm shift, moving from traditional management into a world of agileorganizations and processes. An agile enterprise should be able to rapidly respond to market changes. For this reason,industries have been seeking to develop effective support systems in a collaborative format to assist with theirproduct design processes. By their very nature, product design is a complex process. It is, therefore, difficult toachieve the goals using only traditional product design technology methods. Because of the autonomous andcollaborative aspects inherent in agent-based technology, this is a promising solution to the product design problem.To solve the design problem, the agent technology radically alters not only the way in which computers areinteracted, but also the way complex processes, e.g., product design, which are conceptualized and built. This paperproposes an agent-based data mining (DM) system and formulates agile interaction for the collaboration of productdesign entities. The agent-based DM system enhances product agility through the approach in which the agentsautonomously plan and pursue their objectives and sub-goals, to cooperate, coordinate, and negotiate with others,and to respond flexibly and intelligently to dynamic and unpredictable situations.
