摘要

Externally gapped line arrester using zinc oxide elements (EGLA) has been developed in 1980's in Japan. It has many practical advantages for overhead line use, which are originated from the isolated arrester body from power line. EGLA has been extensively used since then and contributed to significant improvement of lightning protection performance of overhead transmission lines, hence it is regarded as a proven technology in Japan. This paper summaries the application experience, discusses about required performance and introduces the necessary tests to verify the performance.
