DESIGN OF CARTERTON EVENT CENTRE: AN EXAMPLE OF INNOVATIVE COLLABORATION BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND TIMBER ENGINEERING

This paper describes the architectural and structural design of the Carterton Events Centre, located approximately 100km north of Wellington, New Zealand. The new facility incorporates a new Auditorium / Town Hall, two existing buildings - including a heritage Library - and a range of other community functions. The Auditorium features the use of innovative Pres-Lam post-tensioned LVL shear walls for the lateral load resisting system and LVL roof trusses while the Library has been sympathetically strengthened with plywood sheathed shear walls. Dynamic time history analyses of the Pres-Lam walls have been carried out as additional check of the design procedure. The analyses confirmed the expected design performance of the building.
