Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on glulam members with rectangular holes, reinforced laterally by means of glued-on plywood panels. It is shown that large holes of up to 40 % of the beam depth can be effectively reinforced to almost the shear force capacity of the full cross-section. The results of extensive strain measurements on the glulam and the reinforcing panels reveal in general good agreement with 3D finite element computations. The obtained experimental and numerical results provide the basis for the derivation of new analytical design equations. The paper presents several details of a new simplified calculation approach aiming to amend the current method given in the German annex to the European timber design code EC5.
