This work demonstrates the advantages of multi-channel measurements of SGLI loaded on the Japanese mission JAXA/GCOM-C (SIKISAI in Japanese) for aerosol retrieval in severe events of biomass burning aerosol (BBA). It has been shown in the previous work that the classification algorithms for aerosol types mainly used near-UV data are available to facilitate the subsequent aerosol retrieval. These algorithms for aerosol classification are expanded to the severe biomass burning events (BBAE) in this work. The SGLI has 19 channels from near-UV to thermal IR including polarization channels in the red (0.67 μm; named P1 band) and near-IR (0.86 μm; P2 band). Here the compatibility of polarization information and non-polarization one are examined, and effective use of both is made for aerosol characterization in severe biomass burning aerosol events (BBAE).
