The depression of pyrite in marmatite flotation by a new depressant Sodium Glycerine-xanthate (SGX) has been investigated through microflotation, zeta potential, and adsorption measurements in systems open to the atmosphere. The flotation tests of single mineral show that in the presence of SGX, marmatite can be activated by Cu2+ and shows good flotability, while pyrite can't be activated and therefore shows poor flotability, as a result these two minerals can be separated using butyl xanthate as the collector. The depression mechanism of SGX on sulfide minerals is discussed based on Zeta potential and adsorption isotherm. Zeta potential experiments demonstrate that at the presence of Cu2+, SGX can strongly adsorb on the surface of pyrite, while it can't adsorb on the surface of marmatite, thus the results are in accordance with those of flotation experiments; the results of adsorption isotherms show that the adsorption density of SGX on pyrite is greater.
