Since 1997, the McStas, neutron ray-tracing simulation package has been hosted at RISO in strong collaboration with the current leading European neutron facility at ILL, Grenoble. During its lifetime, McStas has evolved to become the world leading software in the area of neutron scattering simulations for instrument design, optimisation, virtual experiments and science. If the European Spallation Source (ESS) is built in Lund, Sweden, the features of McStas and the know-how of the McStas team will be an important contribution to designing and running world leading neutron scattering instruments at the brightest European neutron source. Virtual experiments, i.e. full simulations of instrument and sample, will play a very important role both in the preparation and operating phase of a future ESS. Virtual experiments will be used for optimally designing instruments, for optimally utilizing instruments, for user training, for tests of analysis software and infrastructure as well as modelling and advanced data analysis methods. Among the neutron Monte-Carlo simulation packages, McStas has the most advanced features and methods for performing virtual experiments including effects of instrument, sample environment and samples. McStas includes 128 components, including neutron source models, polarized and non-polarised neutron optics, detectors and samples. McStas includes 55 example instruments utilising a broad range of our components. McStas also includes tools for running and analysing virtual experiments with neutrons, on all types of computer equipment from laptops to thousand-node supercomputers.This presentation includes an introduction to the McStas package and ongoing simulation projects of ESS importance, with main focus on virtual experiments.
