ZrB_2-SiC/C composites were prepared by hot-pressing. The ablation resistance was tested in an oxyacetylene flame with high velocity gas. The effect of SiC on the ablation behavior was studied. Results showed that the value of linear ablation rates was lower in the composites than those measured for pure carbon, decreasing with increasing SiC content below 120s. A dense and uniform multi-oxide compositional layer composed of a refractory oxide skeleton and a glass component could be formed on the substrate surface during ablation, which acted as an effective oxygen barrier and greatly improved the ablation resistance of the composites.
