Carbon nanofiber (CNF) nanocomposite is strongly expected for simple, flexible electron beam source. The CNF nanocomposite enables us to accomplish extremely stable operation because of the relatively high thermal conductance of the Joule heating. We have investigated detailed field emission characteristics of side electron emission devices. Strong electron emission from the cross-sectional side of the nanocomposite sheet has been confirmed. The obtained threshold electric field is less than 250 V and the saturation current has been found to increase gradually. Furthermore, the field emission pattern demonstrates highly uniform electron emission from the cross-sectional side. The luminance from the emission area exceeded 1000 cd/m~2.
