Mechanical and chemical properties of carbon fibers are remarkably affected by several factors related to the synthesizing stage of precursor. Thus carbon fibers with excellent properties cannot be made without profound study and understanding of precursor. In this study, synthesized carbon fiber precursors were prepared by suspension polymerization. The molecular weight and particle diameter of synthesized polyacrylonitrile-based precursors were influenced by reaction temperature and initiator concentration because the initially nucleation stage and monomer solubility are very important factor in polymer process. Molecular weight and surface characterizations of the particles were performed by methods such as scanning electron microscopy, Gel permeation chromatography, and gravimetric measurements.
