Many of the unique surface chemical properties of carbon materials are now much better understood [1-4]. In electrochemical applications the opportunities for improved and novel products are very attractive. Has the new surface chemistry knowledge led, or can it lead, to improvements in our understanding of carbon surface electrochemistry? Breakthroughs in the performance of carbon-based fuel cells, batteries, capacitors and electro-sensors would be facilitated by such developments.
