SEVEN YEARS IN THE MAKING: THE CHALLENGES, SUCCESSES AND LESSONS LEARNED OF THE FAIRWOOD INTERCEPTOR PROJECT, KING COUNTY, WA

In 2000, King County retained a consulting team to develop an implementable solution to remove and replace an interceptor that was installed within an unstable, environmentally sensitive area. Between the start of design in 2000 and construction completion in 2007, the Fairwood Interceptor Project has proved to be a cutting-edge project that not only required the project to have an innovative and creative process to obtain stakeholder approval, but required a little bit of everything "trenchless": high-risk horizontal directional drilling of a multi-barrel siphon, 2,500 linear feet in length; replacement and upsizing of sewers located between homes and in a golf course using pipebursting; bore and jack under a newly widened roadway; and microtunneling through a residential neighborhood and schoolyard. The project was successful and is now completed and, looking back, there are many things that worked well, and a few challenges that required new and innovative solutions. This paper discusses the project as a whole from inception to completion and provides an open discussion on the technical challenges, on obtaining community acceptance and on the hard-fought lessons learned.
