Many aspects of the development necessary to facilitate successful assembly processes for 01005 size passive components have been examined and published in recent years. In this paper we move on to the next step and discuss the results from actual factory process qualifications that have taken place. The fact that the data has been collected from the same test vehicle, but from several different production sites on different continents, using different printer brands, inspection equipment, placement machines, reflow ovens and personnel, will provide deeper understanding into which factors are common and which are subject to variation in equipment or other variables. In addition, the effects of different pad-sizes and component spacing have been studied in detail. Assembly and rework results have been examined using light microscopy as well as X-ray, shear strength testing and cross-sectioning.
