VpCIs (Vapor phase corrosion inhibitors)plastic films have become very popular during the last two decades as a means to protect metal surfaces.These new package materials prove their superior corrosion protection to meet the packaging challenges in the steel industry.VpCIs are the key components in VpCIs films.They can be emitted from the polymer matrix and extend their corrosion inhibiting properties.The disadvantage of the commonly used VpCIs is their toxicity,such as cyclohexyl ammonium carbonate (CHAC)and dicyclohexyl ammonium nitrite (DICHAN).Hence,replacing them with new,environmental-friendly inhibitors is desirable.In this paper,bis-(cyclohexylaminomethyl)-urea (BCMU)was developed as a VpCIs for mild steel.Its vapor corrosion inhibition property was evaluated by volatile inhibiting sieve test (VIS).Electrochemical measurements were applied to study the inhibition of BCMU against corrosion of mild steel.Its adsorption on steel surface was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).The results indicate that BCMU has good protection effect for steel.It can form a protective film on the steel surface.The interaction of Fe with N,O heteroatoms of BCMU was also suggested.
