Beginning in September 2013, Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) began to require a community cash contribution on all projects. Prior to establishing this policy, a review was conducted of existing literature on the subject, current practices of organizations in the international development community, and lessons learned from EWB-USA community development programs. This paper summarizes that review and compiles our own lessons learned. This paper supports the requirement of cash and in-kind community contributions, as there is sufficient evidence that such contributions improve long-term project sustainability.
