Isambard Kingdom Brunei's father, Marc Brunei, was famous for his tunneling shield and the Thames Tunnel in London, the first major urban river tunnel. Marc also was an engineer in New York City and invented a British navy wooden rigging device and was designated as Sir Marc Brunei. His son, I.K. Brunei, in his early twenties, was the engineer for the Thames Tunnel and almost drowned in a cave-in when other workers were killed. The Thames Tunnel was designated in 1991 as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark (IHCEL) by ASCE and the Institution for Civil Engineers (ICE).For a number of years, I.K. Brunei lost out on several engineering project proposals until he won the competition for the Bristol Clifton Suspension Bridge. Many of I.K. Brunei's famous projects were in Southwest Britain near Bristol. Among these were the SS Great Britain, now renovated and docked in Bristol, the largest ship built at that time, the Great Southwest Railway with Brunei's design of London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads Stations and the Box Tunnel. The Great Southwest Railway was designated an IHCEL by ASCE and ICE in 2006. Other railroad projects included the Royal Albert Bridge, Swindon Railway Village, and Maidenhead Bridge. This video shows the creative engineering genius of I.K. Brunei, displayed so well at the Brunei Museum in London with the newly improved pumping shaft tunnel access by pedestrians in time for the 2012 London Olympics. I.K. Brunei also designed the SS Great Eastern ship, the largest built after the SS Great Britain.
