Analysis of impact of South-to-North Water Transfer Project on groundwater exploitation in North China

Groundwater over-pumping is widespread in the South-North Water Transfer Project's Beneficiary region and continues for more than twenty years. The great water diversion project will increase water availability of the North China and provide historical opportunities for the solution of severe groundwater over-pumping. Based on the groundwater overexploitation reduction planning conducted by the Ministry of Water Resources, groundwater overexploitation status, induced ecological issues, possibility of overexploitation reduction are discussed. Major difficulties for the solution of groundwater overexploitation are analyzed.
