Field Investigation Techniques for Characterization and Delineation of COPR

A field investigation was conducted at a chromium ore processing residue (COPR) fill site in the Baltimore area. The purpose of the field investigation was to delineate the vertical and horizontal boundaries of the COPR fill area in and assess the unique variations in the physical properties within COPR. Two types of COPR were identified at the site: a weakly consolidated, granular, gray-black (GB) material; and a moderately to strongly lithified/weathered, hard-brown (HB) material. Multiple field techniques were used to characterize and sample the COPR at the site, including down-hole geophysics; cone penetrometer testing (CPT) with resistivity and piezo cones; and direct drilling with split-spoon, direct push macro cores, and Pitcher tube-sampling techniques. Correlations were developed between the outputs from the CPT, direct drilling, and geophysical approaches to characterize the COPR stratigraphy over a large area.
