Loudness discrepancies have been a major source ofheadaches for the broadcast professional, and only seemto be getting worse in digital television broadcasts. Before corrective action can be taken, programloudness must be measured and the behavior of theprofessional integrated receiver/decoder (IRD)understood. A broadcaster’s best efforts at controllingloudness and reducing the number and frequency ofviewer complaints can be undermined by just a fewoutlier programs or a delivery path that has not beenappropriately managed. Rather than approaching thetask piecemeal, a systemic approach is necessary toachieve the best results and reduce viewer complaints.
