New developments in HD RadioTM broadcasttransmission such as the move to increase the signalpower allocated to the HD RadioTM subcarriershasprompted Nautel to take a closer look at the peaktoaveragepower(PAPR) reduction of the standard IBOCsolution and its applicability within this new reality.While the standard PAPR reduction effectively reducessignal peaks from over 12 Db to under 8 Db, Nautelintroduces a novel approach to PAPR reductionspecifically for the hybrid FM+IBOC waveform. Manyprinciples equally apply to alldigitaltransmission, butsignificant gains are realizable only in hybridtransmission. Research conducted at Nautel to dateindicates that a savings of 30% or more in requiredtransmitter power can be obtained. To take fulladvantage of the new sub-carrierpower levelsadditional transmitter overhead will be required,however, even existing hybrid transmitter installationscan benefit from this innovation and effectively boostthe power in their digital sub-carriers.
