The MIL-S-901 standard medium weight shock test machine (MWST) allows for testdisplacements of 3 inches and 1-1/2 inches. It is known that various shipboard locationsexhibit displacement in excess of 3 inches under shock induced loading. A largerdisplacement test is particularly important in those cases where equipment componentcollisions or bottoming of resilient mounting systems is possible. Current practice toaccommodate larger displacement shock motion is costly and time consuming because itrequires the use of floating shock test platforms. Design changes developed by theCanadian Navy to enable a 5” table travel using the MWST machine are reported and thelarger displacement shock test environment is described.
