While HD Radio is being deployed in the U.S.,Europeans are deploying new versions of DAB andDRM and also introducing new systems such as DMBand DVB-H.This paper will explain the background of these systemsand their operational appeal to both public and privatebroadcasters, contrasting them to the efforts being madeto introduce HD Radio to Europe.The fragmented European market makes it difficult tointroduce a common digital radio standard for all ofEurope. While DAB is a great success in somecountries, others have switched off their transmissionsand are evaluating alternative solutions.New satellite broadcasting systems for mobile receptionwill also be introduced within the next years and alsoInternet Streaming and IP based transmission formobile reception will become more and moreimportant.The main focus of this paper will be on terrestrialbroadcast systems.
