The increasing role of LPG and natural gas as transportation fuels in Algeria

The consumption of final energy in Algeria, which is the motor of economic and socialprosperity, has known a striking growth in the last few years, favoured by a booming nationaleconomy.Naftal, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, as the main national operator in petroleum productsdistribution, faces a highly challenging issue which consists in meeting this ever increasingenergy demand and in the same time, promoting clean fuels for environment objectives.To this aim, Naftal has developed a strategy which favors the use of less harmful fuels to theenvironment such as LPG fuel and natural gas Fuels, as well as unleaded gasoline andadditives-based fuels.In this presentation, we will outline Naftal experience in introducing in the Algerian market theLPG and natural gas car fueling and we will deal in particular with the following issues:1. Project technical description: This part will detail the consistency of the project in terms ofdistribution infrastructures, car conversion to LPG and natural gas fuel and in terms ofinvestment and overall profitability,2. Regulation: This part will deal with the new regulation which had to be promulgated to allowthe use of these new fuels,3. Marketing and Public awareness: This issue was very important and painstaking as it wasdifficult to convince car users to adopt these new 'gaseous hence dangerous' fuel inreplacement of more 'safe traditional liquid' fuels.4. Results: We will present here, the results of our experience in terms of:5. Market share of LPG and natural gas fuel achieved,6. Environment protection : Impact of using the fuels on the pollutant emissions level,7. Finance savings for the petroleum companies and the end users.8. World Petroleum Council.
