Trans-l,4-bis (isocyanatomethyl) cyclohexane (1,4-H_6XDI), which is referred to as FORTIMO? 1,4-H_6XDI, is a new alicyclic diisocyanate and its polyurethanes will be introduced. FORTIMO? 1,4-H_6XDI has a linear and high symmetrical structure which forms a well-organized hard segment phase by reaction with a chain extender, such as 1,4-butanediol. Therefore a micro-phase separation structure between soft segment and hard segment phases is progressed which resulted in an improved elasticity and heat resistance such as softening temperature. In addition, the light stability of this polyurethane is excellent due to an aliphatic structure. Polyurethane based on FORTIMO? 1,4-H_6XDI achieve elasticity, heat resistant and light stability which was not able to be realized with the conventional diisocyanate. FORTIMO? 1,4-H_6XDI is applicable to various polyurethane applications. For example, in the use of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), FORTIMO? TPU shows excellent resilience, compression set and shorter demold time at injection molding when compared with those based on dicyclohexyl methane - 4,4'- diisocyanate (H_(12)MDI) and 4,4'-diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI), respectively. It is surprising in thermoset polyurethane (TSU), that the flexural fatigue properties of FORTIMO? TSU are improved when compared to those based on o-toluidine diisocyanate (TODI), naphthalene diisocyanate (NDI) and para-phenylene diisocyanate (PPDI). Additionally, FORTIMO? 1,4-H_6XDI can be applicable to water dispersed polyurethane and flexible polyurethane foam application. This technical paper will describe the basic characteristics and features of FORTIMO? in various polyurethane applications.
