LANXESS believes that an increasing interest in rigid polyurethane foam for insulation materials is expected due to the world wide growing awareness of climate change and energy consumption. The fire safety in these building and construction applications is an important aspect. In order to meet these fire safety requirements, various flame retardants are used in rigid polyurethane foams. One of the most suitable and widely used group of flame retardants is based on phosphorus. This includes chlorinated phosphate esters as well as halogen free compounds. In this paper, the performance of blends based on phosphorus flame retardants in rigid polyurethane formulations will be compared with the performance of individual phosphorus flame retardants. Within the scope of the comparison, the effectiveness of these blends in fire tests will be shown. Furthermore, the impact of the blend composition on processing, stability and foam properties will be discussed. The results show that blending phosphorus based flame retardants can help to adjust rigid PU formulations to different requirements such as flame retardancy, processing and physical foam properties as requested in the final application.
