Acme-Hardesty, a manufacturer in bio-based chemicals, will discuss polyol formulations composed of the natural oil polyol, castor oil. These bio-based polyols have demonstrated performance advantages over traditional petroleum-based polyether polyols when used in slabstock and molded foam. Manufacturers and end users of polyurethane foam are increasingly focused on formulations containing higher amounts of bio-based materials in place of petroleum-based alternatives. Acme-Hardesty will discuss their castor bio-based polyols that can be formulated into a set of polyurethane foams with defined properties, in many cases as a drop-in replacement for petroleum-based polyols. These formulations could potentially offer significant performance improvements over the traditional petroleum-based formulations, providing equal or even superior performance in slabstock and molded polyurethane foam. Castor oil polyols provide improved viscosity allowing the formulator to use high filler loading in foam formulations if desired. These polyols are USDA BioPreferred with a new carbon content of 98% or higher, improving the sustainability profile of the formulated foam and for earning "Green" building credits for certification. This paper will also introduce EcOH-X polyol, a new proprietary bio-based polyol that provides improved scorch performance while maintaining the benefits of castor oil.
